ALLOW SCOTT BADER TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR BOAT BUILDING TASK
Because of the new colors in Gel Coats, boat manufacturers are building more boats in colors other than white, are you one of them? If so, then Print Thru will become a major problem for you. Please read the following to further understand how Scott Bader can help you with this problem
Now that you've made the hull, the next step is to add the bulkheads and gussets. The typical method is to insert the jig holding your wooden bulkheads and gussets into the boat hull. Then you would send in a team of workers who have had to cut fiberglass, dip the glass into polyester, take the liquid dripping glass into the hull, overlap the bulkhead and the hull with the glass and roll it out. Often times during this procedure, boat manufacturers experience "Print Thru". This print thru is caused because the polyester soaked fiberglass is catalyzed by an MEKP catalyst and because the hulls have not totally cured, (they are about 80%). The introduction of fresh resin and MEKP will begin to further cure and exotherm along the joined areas, thus causing shrinkage and will pull in on the sides of the hull. This is the distortion you will see when you are looking down the sides of the boat. In many white boats, this is not as visible as it is in colored hulls, especially the darker colored hulls. How do you solve this issue?
Scott Bader manufactures and sells several adhesives to fix this problem.
These Crestomer products adhere to substrates such as wood, fiberglass and metal.
THESE ADHESIVES ARE IS NOT A METHYL METHACRYLATE and they ARE NOT EPOXIES. The Crestomers work from an entirely unique type of chemistry, they smell like a polyester, cure like a polyester, in fact, we encourage our customers to use the MEKP that they would use in their gel coats as a curing agent.
Our larger customers have purchased dispensing machines to dispense our Crestomer adhesives, the machine along with a "filleting tool" and one to two workers can install the bulkheads and gussets to a boat very quickly and efficiently. | |
Typically, on a 45-48 foot boat, these wooden substrates can be adhered into their hulls in about 35 minutes time.
After a short period of time, the fixturing device can be removed and the boat can then be moved on. These new joints filled with Crestomer, will exhibit much more strength and durability than the glass layed joints and there will be NO PRINT THRU! This is why Crestomer is becoming the hottest name among the biggest boat builders in the US and around the world! Please see the attached chart to determine which Crestomer is right for your application.
