Alkyd Resins

Scott Bader has an extensive portfolio of solvent based “Crestakyd” alkyd resins for the Decorative and Industrial Coatings market.

With pan European manufacturing capability our range consists of:

Short Oil Alkyds
Use in low bake enamels, industrial wood finishing, road marking paints and quick air drying industrial paints.

Medium Oil Alkyds
Industrial wood finishing, general industrial and automotive refinish.

Long Oil Alkyds
Both conventional and high solids are available for decorative, maintenance and the marine sectors.

Modified Alkyds and Epoxy esters
Rosin, phenolic, styrene and other modified types are available for a wide range of anticorrosive, industrial and marine application areas.

We are able to offer low VOC compliant systems to meet the ever more stringent legislative demands of the coatings sector and also a toll manufacturing service for speciality products.

Solvent Based Acrylics

Solvent-borne thermoplastic acrylics have excellent colour retention and outdoor durability combined with both water and moisture resistance.

Our acylics can be used in a variety of different ways:

  • As they have excellent adhesion to both metal and a range of plastics they are used in a variety of coatings for marine, protective and the car refinish industry
  • They are used in the construction industry for cement and masonry sealers and roofing products
  • With the advantage of fast solvent release combined with excellent film formation, our solvent based acrylics are also used as the main binder for both traffic paints and aerosol applications

Solid resins

Our Texicryl S range of solid resins and solutions provide wide benefits for the formulation of both inks and varnishes.

Whether gloss improvement, resolubility, pigment wetting or dispersion are required we have a broad portfolio of products to achieve premium performance.

The solid resins are available in a range of molecular weights applicable for the appropriate Graphic Arts  application.

Aqueous resin solutions are the solubilised forms of certain solid grades incorporating ammonia, or a suitable amine or solubilising agent.

Thickeners

With our extensive knowledge of acrylic waterborne chemistries Scott Bader have developed a wide range of thickeners (to increase the viscosity of a system) and rheology modifiers (to change the flow characteristics of a formulation) for numerous applications.

Our product offering comprises of the following technology platforms:

Inverse Emulsions
Texipol thickeners are dispersions of aqueous polymer solutions in an inert continuous phase oil. When added directly to an aqueous system the hydrophilic polymer particles swell rapidly and the resulting highly swollen structure leads to a rapid increase in viscosity. These are highly efficient thickeners and can be added at any stage of the formulating process.

Alkali Swellable Emulsions
Texicryl – (ASE). These are dispersions of acid functional acrylic polymers in water. They are supplied at low pH and when the polymer chains are neutralised with the addition of alkali, this allows the polymer to swell and thicken. Pseudoplastic in behaviour, ASE are sold into a wide range of waterbased applications.

Hydrophobically Modified Alkali Swellable Emulsions
Texicryl – (HASE). As with the standard ASE polymers, these are dispersions of acid functional acrylic polymers. In addition to these acid groups, the HASE systems have long hydrophobes attached to the polymer backbone. As with the ASE polymers, thickening is activated with an increase in pH of the system and interaction of the hydrophobes with each other and formulation ingredients impacts the rheological properties.

HASE thickeners can be designed to give formulated system rheologies ranging from pseudoplastic to fairly Newtonian depending on the nature of the hydrophobe and the polymer design.
