Long-term marine partnership supports Fairline’s improved performance

The Challenge: Enhancing the culture at Fairline

Over the decades, Scott Bader had utilised its technical expertise in marine composite materials to develop a series of personalised products for Fairline. Whilst that had many benefits at the time, the build-up of specialist products over a long period of time meant Fairline’s lead times increased, alongside waste, which subsequently increased costs and cash flow constraints.

Therefore, Peter Hamlyn, Fairline’s Chief Operations Officer, set the challenge to move Fairline’s production towards Scott Bader’s ‘off the shelf’ marine composite, tooling and structural adhesives range, which still provides the quality materials needed for Fairline’s handcrafted luxury yachts, but with shorter lead times and reduced order quantities.

The Solution: Technical Marine Expertise and High Quality Materials

Utilising Scott Bader’s technical marine team and their expertise, Fairline have now moved over to Scott Bader’s off the shelf marine range of composite, tooling and structural adhesive materials. The result is a significant reduction in order quantities, lead times and waste for Fairline.

Scott Bader supported Fairline with its technical and sales teams attending site to understand the challenges Fairline faced, walk the production lines, advise on suitable alternative materials, provide a presentation on implementation and cost savings, plus provide all of the technical information like TDS and safety data sheets.

They also worked closely with the Fairline Mould Team when the new material arrived on site to ensure they were aware of the slight differences with the replacement material and how best to use them for efficient production.

We have used Scott Bader materials since the late 60’s. They are a local supplier to Fairline, with superior weathering low styrene products, whilst being an ethical company with a superb range from gelcoats, resins through to topcoats and structural adhesives that have never let us down. Scott Bader’s technical support is second to none and always on hand, both online but also when required at our facility, to guide us but also to discuss improvements and auditing our internal processes to support and help the team through better understanding of the chemicals and bench marking best practice.
