Today we join the United Nation’s celebration of women and girls in science! According to the United Nations, women still account for only 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of graduates in computer science and informatics. In light of this, we thought we would share just a few of the talented female colleagues working for Scott Bader in science.
What do you enjoy most about being a woman working in science?
Being able to use a subject that I’m passionate about and apply it to real world solutions for our customers, and ultimately deliver value to society.
What did you study at University?
Bachelor of Science (BSc), Chemistry.
Since joining Scott Bader, what are you most proud of?
Delivering product developments to support new business growth. Seeing customers successfully using a product you have helped create is one of the best feelings.
What advice would you give other women considering a career in science?
Go for it! It can lead to an incredibly fulfilling career. Keep an open mind on your specialism and use opportunities such as work placements to discover what type of science career you will enjoy.
What do you enjoy most about being a woman working in science?
I enjoy the creativity it offers when it comes to innovating a new product. Value engineered solutions can be found through the basic foundations of science. This also gives freedom to try out different approaches creatively.
What did you study at university?
I have a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering
Since joining Scott Bader, what are you most proud of?
Employee inclusiveness and empowerment within the organisation. Respect for core values with focus on teamwork. Also, seeing that the organisation realises the strength women bring and is focussed on keeping the male: female ratio balanced within the organisation. It also has a futuristic approach of analysing salary parity with men at the same level and also addresses this very professionally, with data and analysis. This brings in the confidence that women are very valued as a part of the group.
What advice would you give other women considering a career in science?
Don’t be afraid or caught up in the complexity that science sometimes presents itself as. If you are passionate enough, it brings in immense opportunities in so many areas where you can contribute personally & professionally.
What do you enjoy most about being a woman working in science?
Problem solving be it developing an engineering solution or analysing data to understand why a process is behaving the way it does.

Since joining Scott Bader, what are you most proud of?
Some of the upgrade projects like bringing Adhesives into Scott Bader that grew from converting an existing mixer to the installation of PM4
What advice would you give other women considering a career in science?
Gender is not a barrier there are so many options with a career in science
What do you enjoy most about being a woman working in science?
I enjoy the variety that working in the science field can provide. There’s always something new to learn, interesting and relevant to wider society. It’s a collaborative area too, therefore you don’t really work in isolation. I’ve always enjoyed the practical side of cosmetic product development and being able to bring my skills to a new company has been personally rewarding.

Since joining Scott Bader, what are you most proud of?
Being at the start of a new direction for the company in developing and supplying materials into the personal care field has been challenging, but equally I feel I am making a valuable input. I enjoy being able to share my experience with the wider team, and help the sales team/distributors with questions relating to cosmetic product formulations.
What advice would you give other women considering a career in science?
Working in science isn’t about working in a laboratory, wearing a white coat or being on your feet all day. Initially all scientists may start their careers in this way, but there are potentially so many different career paths ranging from technical sales, teaching, business development, project management, patent attorney, consultancy as well as research. The fundamental skills that you learn from a career in science can open up many doors in other areas outside of the laboratory.
What do you enjoy most about being a woman working in science?
The thing I enjoy most about working in science it the sheer variety of products and chemistries we get to work with. We get to work on a range of challenging and interesting projects, with results in a lot of variety in the day to day of the job.

I studied Chemistry at the University of Birmingham
Since joining Scott Bader, what are you most proud of?
The thing I am most of proud of since working at Scott Bader has been my opportunity to lead the Women in Science outreach event at the University of Northampton.
What advice would you give other women considering a career in science?
The advice I would give anyone considering a career in science is to take as many opportunities as possible to get exposure to their potential area of interest, whether it be outreach events, workshops, work experience, internships or a year in industry.
